Ryusaku, often known simply as Ryu, is member of a revolutionary movement alongside Kei that aims to put an end to the Akira project. During the story, Ryu moves from his terrorist roots to a more heroic role.
He evolves into a braver figure, aligning himself with Yamada and playing a crucial role in leading Kaneda towards Akira’s containment chamber, where Tetsuo remains entrenched. Notably, Ryu deals with a persistent struggle with alcohol dependency. In the final narrative, he is forced to take drastic measures, reluctantly shooting Akira when the latter’s powers begin to manifest out of control. Unfortunately, Ryu’s own life is abruptly ended by falling debris from a broken elevator shortly after.
