Tetsuo is a central character in Akira and Kaneda’s childhood friend. He is, in many ways, the tragic protagonist of the story. Unlike Kaneda, Tetsuo is initially portrayed as insecure and frustrated, often feeling overshadowed by his friend Kaneda’s dominant personality, as he always defended him against his bullies. After a chance encounter with a psychic child, Tetsuo begins to develop immense and uncontrollable psychic powers. This will turn him into a kind of omnipotent figure without control.
His relationship with Kaneda is one of the most complex plots in the anime: at first he saw Kaneda as an idol and a great friend, who saved him from various situations. But as time went by, he began to challenge Kaneda’s authority, wanting to impose himself on him.
When Tetsuo’s latent psychic abilities awaken, he gains immense telekinetic powers. But these new abilities serve only to amplify his insecurities and resentments, turning him into some kind of monster with great powers.
Tetsuo’s transformation represents humanity’s dangerous search for forces beyond its comprehension and control. He embodies the human fault of wanting more, of aspiring to omnipotence without any regard for the consequences. His attempts to control and contain his growing powers (which eventually consume him) are a warning about the dangers of technological and biological advancement without ethical and spiritual control.
Tetsuo complies with several features of any true cyberpunk character. He is an outcast addicted to drugs, takes pills to enhance his uncontrollable power, and comes to the extreme of deforming his body in a grotesque way. Tetsuo changes his identity until he loses himself. A new sample of the inherent corruption of power that Katsuhiro Otomo repeats in his work.
